HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
I want to update you on a recent victory! After months of shared advocacy, DCRC and Independent Living Centers across California were triumphant in our ongoing state budget battle with Governor Newsom and the California Legislature.
The Governor’s proposed May budget revision would have slashed funding for Independent Living Centers by $2.1 million and for Aging and Disability Resource Centers by $3.0 million. These frightening reductions emerged as the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately threatens the lives of seniors and people with disabilities.
Thankfully, on the 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act our collective voices blocked these dramatic cuts to DCRC’s annual budget and further reinforced the importance of the Olmstead Decision – the most important civil rights decision for people with disabilities in our country’s history – preserving our right to live in the community of our choice. Thank you for your continued support and partnership – your letters, emails and tweets made a significant difference!
We won this battle, but our fight is far from over. Although we may have momentarily thwarted attacks on funding Independent Living Centers, the DCRC team continues to work tirelessly every day to provide a range of essential services, including intensive case management, housing and transportation assistance, home modifications and assistive technology among others.
We can’t meet these ever-increasing needs without your support. Within three short months we need to raise $100,000 by the end of our fiscal year on September 30, 2020. Please consider making a contribution today to DCRC to fund these critical services.
You can DONATE HERE through our secure portal. Every contribution helps. Monthly recurring gifts will amplify your support throughout the year. Thank you for being an essential contributor to support our ongoing vision of equality, social justice and independence for all!
